Haunted Houses, Hayrides and Pumpkins! Where To Celebrate Halloween in San Diego!


If it’s October,  you can rest assured that Pumpkin Spiced everything is back and Halloween in right around the corner!  Did you know that San Diego is home to the largest and most talked about haunted houses in the nation?  This was new to us as well until we did a little research, but whether you are looking for a not so scary haunted house experience, or one that will make you sleep with the lights for the unforeseeable future, it’s all here.


The Haunted Trail, Balboa Park: This is no simple walk in the park.  San Diego’s only outdoor haunted trail and Experiment Maze is located in the world famous Balboa Park.  At a mile long, you want to be sure to watch your back! Please be aware, this is not for children under 10 or for those who are faint of heart. The Haunted Hotel, Downtown Gaslamp: Named  #2 of the top 13 haunts in the United States, and featured on the Travel Channel’s show “America’s Scariest Haunts,” The Haunted Hotel is the longest running haunted house in San Diego. Enjoy, or rather scream your way through  the “Hellevator,” stroll down dark hallways, see Zombies, and try to make your way through the muck and mire of the Hillbilly swamp.  Enter at your own risk.  424 Market Street. 619-696-SCARE. hauntedhotel.com.


The Scream Zone, Del Mar:  Located at the famous Del Mar Fairgrounds, this is San Diego’s largest haunted experience. Many consider this the scariest fest in all of San Diego and North County.  Tremble through the House of Horror, KarnEvil and the Haunted Hayride, each casting its evil spell on unsuspecting guests.  Food vendors, photo opportunities and the Spirit Bar are available as well.  2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. The Scream Zone


Scotty’s Scare Trail, El Cajon: Friday and Saturday nights only starting October 6, this spooky walk at the Old Abandoned Marshal Scotty’s Playland is said to be haunted by past park employees….even the restrooms are said to be quite the scary experience.  Be sure and enquire about their “Not So Scary” trail for younger children.  14011 Ridge Hill Rd. Savage House – Unhinged, San Diego.  Unlike other haunted houses, this haunted experience has a twist.  Savage House will have you immersed in a storyline fit for a horror movie from beginning to end.  Not for anyone under 12 years old, the Savage House is located at Westfield Mission Valley in the Target parking lot.  Check their website for additional information and hours.  savage productionss.org


Monster Manor, San Diego. Open Friday and Saturday nights only, the creepy Ghastly family home rises up from the ashes from where it once stood.  The former residents, the Ghastly’s create havoc while taunting and scaring their guests.  Please call for hours and additional information.  8235 Mira Mesa Blvd. 858-222-4815.
