Where The Surf Meets The Turf…Del Mar’s Summer Racing Season is here!

bing_crosby_season_starting_gate1

Opening Day at the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club kicks off on Wednesday, July 19th, and as always, it promises to be one of the most fun, if not the most fashionable events in San Diego County. With over 40,000 race enthusiasts expected to attend, there is no doubt that Del Mar is the place to be. The tradition goes back 80 years  when one of the track’s founders, legendary actor and crooner Bing Crosby, greeted the first guests at the gate on the very first opening day.  Today, Del Mar offers the second largest horse racing venue in the Western United States and includes special events such as free Friday Night Concerts throughout the summer.

For Opening Day however, it  isn’t just about the horse racing, though some might disagree.  Instead, the day also includes the traditional “Hat Contest” where people vie in the following categories: Most Glamorous, Best Racing Theme, Most Outrageous, Best Fascinator and Flowers/All Other.  “The Party” on Opening Day includes DJ, dance floor, BBQ, private wagering and other perks for a cost of $35.  For additional information, contact the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club.

What makes the Del Mar Race Track a sought after event?  It is the social and horse event of the summer for not just San Diego, but for all Southern California.  The track offers an ambience like no other with wonderful beach and lagoon views all surrounded by unique shopping, renowned restaurants, a collection of charming and luxury hotels, and championship golf courses nestled along the beautiful San Diego coastline.

Nearby Rancho Santa Fe is also celebrating the ponies with an Official Opening Day After Party held at the Inn at Rancho Santa Fe. From 5:00 until midnight, guests can meet jockeys and others in the horsing industry while enjoying music, cocktails, and a one of a kind culinary exhibition from celebrity chef Casey Thompson. The word of mouth buzz is that even actress Bo Derek will be in attendance. Tickets are $150.
