Modernism Week

Mark your calendars! From Thursday, October 18 through Sunday, October 21 is “Modernism Week Fall Preview” which will feature selections of the most popular events for the upcoming Modernism Week in February 2019.

This much anticipated week celebrates mid-century architecture and design for which the greater Palm Springs area is so well known. Reflecting the times they were designed, the characterization of these properties include open floor plans, large sliding glass doors, and clean lines. Mid-century modern homes go back to 1945 in Los Angeles when the Case Study Houses commissioned architects to design efficient as well as affordable housing for the residential housing boom as a result of returning soldiers at the end of World War II. Its progressive architecture was referred to as contemporary, with the flat and gable roofs, blank stuccoed walls, and indoor/outdoor living.

While today many buyers flock to mid-century modern homes, perhaps due to nostalgia, minimalist aesthetics, and its organic roots and structural transparency, Jay Horn, Executive Director of the Architectural Division for Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty comments that it really is quite simple, “Mid-century modern architecture is a style which has never been out of style. The trend today is to remodel these homes and renovate rather than tear them down. They are an integral part of history.”

Some of the October events available at the time of writing this article include the following:

New Events

Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour – a 2.5-hour overview of the most significant mid-century architectural treasures in Palm Springs

Celebrity Haven the Tennis Club Neighborhood – see close up the inns and resorts that were, and remain, a haven for the stars. Many were designed and built after WWII when America’s appetitive for modern design was sought after.

Frank Sinatra’s Neighborhood the Movie Colony – The Movie Colony neighborhood began in the 1930’s with the El Mirador tower as its centerpiece. After WWII, Frank Sinatra made it his neighborhood when his home, known as “Twin Palms” became the hub and party central. His neighbors included Jack Benny, Tony Curtis, and Cary Grant. (Tour is of exteriors only.)

Laid Back & Leasure with a Modern Twist – Help a non-profit raise funds for public safety and enjoy a tour of a modern contemporary home which blends architecture and design. Enjoy cocktails & cool island/reggae music – all for a good cause.
