On Saturday, August 25, 2018, Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty’s CEO and Managing Partner Steve Games along with his wife Sandy opened their private residence to more than 100 agents, affiliates and supporters eager to join in the company’s efforts to raise money for Brain Cancer research.
The kick-off fundraising event featured a special presentation by Travis Selinka, a fifteen-year-old brain cancer survivor who, at the age of ten, was diagnosed with a type of Brain Cancer called Medulloblastoma. The road to recovery was long and hard for Travis, though he and his family always tried to find the Silver Lining in everything they did. Now five years cancer free, Travis and his family feel blessed to have had the support of organizations like Accelerate Brain Cancer Cure (ABC²) along those who participate in fundraisers such as “Over the Edge for Brain Cancer” helping to lead the fight for a cure. The evening also featured a presentation from Dr. Jeremy Rich, Clinical Professor at the University of California, San Diego who has dedicated his professional career to researching a cure for brain cancer.
For the past two years Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty has organized a team to participate in the “Over the Edge” event. Participants called edgers rappel 365 feet down the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego. Edgers must raise a minimum of $1500 to participate and all event proceeds benefit San Diego-based brain cancer research projects. In just two years, the Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty team, which also includes members from San Diego Funding, Great Pacific Escrow and Guardian Title, has raised $90,000. Their goal this year is to more than double that amount by raising an additional $100,000 as 2018’s largest rappel team.
“Brain cancer does not discriminate, it is a disease that affects so many people from young children through seniors,” says Games. “Since starting our fundraising effort with “Over the Edge” we have heard so many stories from our families, friends, and peers that have been impacted. So, we are not CRAZY for rapelling 365, we just want to do a little more to help find a cure and help those In need.”
Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty Rappel team has been spearheaded by Karen Hickman, veteran Rapeller and Realtor in the company’s La Jolla office. Hickman was inspired to raise awareness and money for brain cancer research after being personally touched by the devastating disease. “I’ve had several friends pass away suddenly after being diagnosed currently there is only a 36% survival rate and now it’s the leading cancer in children,” says Hickman. “I am extremely proud of the support received from our Pacific Sotheby’s International Realty family on behalf of this cause and I am very excited to already have so many of our agents commit to participating and fundraising this year — together we will make a huge impact.”
The “Over the Edge for Brain Cancer” event will be held on Sunday, December 9th, 2018 in the morning. For more information about the event visit www.abc2.org and
